Kids say the darnedest things...

Samantha and Missi went out to Red Robin the other night to have dinner with a friend while Drew and I were at soccer practice. When Samantha came home and was telling me about the experience, I asked her what she had ordered. Her answer?

"Cheese girls and French eyes."

Along these same lines, a friend told me that they took their seven-year-old son to his first Ducks football game a few weeks ago, and when he (the son) walked into Autzen Stadium he said, "Wow, this is even better than HD!"

Football Practice

I took the kids to the Oregon Ducks football practice tonight. Here is a picture of Drew and his buddy Griffin with Ducks QB Dennis Dixon. Unfortunately it came out a bit blurry...

What a weekend

We returned to Eugene last night from a very full but very fun weekend in Portland. The primary reason for all of us to head north was because our friends the Zimels were visiting from Austin, Texas. On Friday night, we were part of a group of 10 close friends that met for dinner at Lucy's Table. The food was good but the company was great. I honestly can't remember the last time I laughed that hard. My buddy Jeff said it best when he remarked that "Having nights like [Friday] makes me realize how much I wish all of us lived in the same city again."

On Saturday I organized a flag football game for a bunch of guys. I didn't get quite the turnout I was hoping for, but we had a great time nonetheless. We ended up playing 5-on-4, and I was all-time offense for most of the game so I was going to be a winner whoever triumphed. We ended up having to go to double-overtime with a sudden-death tiebreaker deciding things. After the game, several of us went out to a friend's house where we ate tacos and shot guns (what a combination!). Saturday evening Missi and I went to a party with our friends Jesse & Nicole. The occasion of the party was to see one of my old high school buddies, Steve Wright. Steve and his wife Hannah live in Phoenix now but it is always great to see them when they come back to Oregon. I wish we could convince them to return to the Northwest!

On Sunday we went to church with the Zimels, attended my mom's birthday party, and then saw the Zimels one last time to say goodbye. It's always tough to say goodbye, but we had a great weekend and we know that we are the type of friends who can pick up where we left off the next time we see them. Besides seeing the Zimels this past weekend, we also had a great time seeing several other friends who we hadn't seen for a long time.

A few pictures from the weekend:

I hate waiting in lines...

It’s just after 6:00AM and I’m all bundled up against the cold. I’m up this early because it’s Monday, and Monday means football tickets are distributed to students. One of the benefits U of O provides students is a free ticket to every football or basketball game. The catch is, however, that there are only a limited number of tickets available and it’s first-come, first-serve, so if you’re too late then the tickets will likely have all been distributed.

This week’s football game is against the Cal Bears, who are ranked in the top 10 nationally. If that didn’t make the game big enough already, ESPN’s national TV show, College GameDay, is making an appearance in Eugene and broadcasting live from Autzen Stadium. The point of all this is to say that the line for tickets this morning is ridiculously long. I’ve been to every home football game for the past two years, and the only other time the line has been this long is when Oregon plays USC. I think the reasons for the super-high-turnout are twofold: first, the Cal-Oregon game is the biggest game on the college football landscape this weekend. There will be considerable buzz about two 4-0 teams meeting. The second reason is that all of the undergrads just moved back onto campus over the weekend. That means their classes are just starting and everyone is excited to do the “college thing,” which for some people means camping out for football tickets.

Usually I work on Monday mornings, but I have a feeling that I won’t make it in to the office until 10:30 or 11:00. But at least I’ll be clutching a prized ticket to the football game – gotta have your priorities in order.

UPDATE AT 1:00PM - It took me a full six hours to get tickets. I got into line at 6:00AM and finally got to the ticket window at noon(disclaimer: tickets didn't start to be distributed until 9:00AM).

This morning's football ticket line. You can see that lots of students have blankets/sleeping bags, etc with them.

Very Interesting Case Before Oregon Supreme Court

A very interesting case is currently before the Oregon Supreme Court. It involves issues of religious freedom and parental rights. The case is even gaining national attention from the Wall Street Journal's Law Blog.

Distinguished Alumnus Banquet

This is a cross-post from that other blog that I post on, but I thought my two readers might find it interesting (thanks for reading Mom and Dad). Missi and I attended the banquet on Friday night.
###
The Distinguished Alumnus Banquet was an enjoyable event. My wife and I were able to meet several alumni of this school, but I think the highlight of the evening was learning all about John Jaqua. It would take me several hours to type out all of the things Mr. Jaqua has done for the law school, but suffice it to say he was a very deserving recipient of the first annual Distinguished Alumnus Award. Here are two tidbits about John Jaqua:

1. John Jaqua received his law degree from UO in 950. Follwoing his service in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Major, Jaqua and William Wheatley established Jaqua & Wheatley LLC in 1962. In 1992, the school presented him with a Meritorious Service Award, an honor given at the discretion of the faculty to individuals who have provided outstanding service to the school or to the field of legal education. In 1999 the University presented John and his wife Robin with Presidential Medals.

Among other achievements, Jaqua has served as president of the Oregon State Bar and, for 20 years, served as the Oregon bar's elected representative to the American Bar Association. He has also been active on the boards of the Lane County Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Relief Nursery, the Law School's Board of Visitors and many other community organizations. (this was printed in the banquet's program).

2. This story about John Jaqua was told by UO President Dave Frohnmayer:

"When the new Knight Law Center was nearing completion, preparations were underway for the opening ceremonies, which included Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor attending and speaking. John Jaqua was at the law school one day and looked around and realized that the building looked 'bare.' He knew that to get funding from the University for landscaping would be difficult and very slow, so he took out his checkbook and wrote a six-figure check and called his landscaper and trees, plants, and bushes miraculously sprung up around the law school in a matter of days."

Gotta love Wal-Mart

Check out these photos from our family's trip to Wal-Mart last night:

If you can buy one for $1.78, how is 2 for $4 a deal?

Can you spot all of the spelling and grammatical errors in this sign. On a side note, have I told you about my pet peeve for public mispellings?

We went to Wal-Mart to buy a fishing pole for me. I'll have to post something soon about our son's new-found love of angling. It's just amazing - the boy seems to care about little else other than wetting a line, and I have no background/interest in fishing. It's an activity that we are learning to do together.
